Since its discovery was announced in 2003, Homo floresiensis has remained a controversial species. Its unique size makes it one of the smallest hominins known, approximately the size of Australopithecus afarensis. LB 1, the type specimen for H. floresiensis, is the skeleton of an adult female. Her diminutive size is often attributed to the effects of living on an island.
